A homeowner called me out to troubleshoot a kitchen light that worked sometimes—but not consistently enough to impress the realtors showing his house. Prospective buyers kept complaining, so he’d already tried replacing the switch and installing a dimmer. Nothing worked. Frustrated, he finally left the 3-way switch hanging halfway out of the wall and called me.
I walked in and immediately spotted the problem: it was a three way switch setup, and one of the wires connecting to the opposite switch was disconnected. When he’d been fiddling with the dimmer and switch replacement, he’d accidentally left it hanging loose. That loose wire was the culprit—depending on which switch he flipped, it would either complete the circuit or break it. No wonder the light worked sometimes.
I reconnected everything and tested both switches. Problem solved.
When I called with the news, the homeowner was genuinely surprised it was even a three way setup. He told me they’d been flipping that opposite switch for years with no idea what it did. That’s when everything clicked for him—all those times the light worked or didn’t work suddenly made sense.
He was a little embarrassed, but mostly relieved. And hopefully, with the kitchen light now working reliably, it’ll help him close the sale.
